Students Served

The Learning Center serves difficult-to-place students between the ages of 6 and 22 years with a primary diagnosis of mild to severe mental retardation, autism, or other developmental disability. In addition, students may carry secondary diagnoses of hearing impairments and other communication disorders, traumatic brain injury, seizure disorders, Tourette's syndrome and emotional and psychiatric disorders. The majority of students enrolled engage in challenging behaviors that cannot be effectively managed in less restrictive settings.

Students admitted to The Learning Center must be ambulatory and toilet trained (or on a toilet management program). Students must have basic activities of daily living (ADL) skills or demonstrate the ability to acquire them within a reasonable amount of time. Unless additional funding is provided, students must not require constant one-to-one supervision or teaching or demonstrate a high frequency of self-injurious behaviors. Students must be medically manageable within The Learning Center's comprehensive medical staffing. A history of criminal activity, fire setting, or substance abuse would preclude the likelihood of admission.

The Learning Center admits students of any sex, race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs and athletic and other school-administered programs. All programs of The Learning Center are non-denominational in nature.

While the majority of the students served are from Massachusetts, The Learning Center currently serves students from other states including Rhode Island and Connecticut. We welcome the opportunity to provide services to individuals with special needs from all over the United States and abroad.
