Admissions Procedures

Referrals to The Learning Center are accepted from funding agencies, parents and other interested parties.

Referrals should be directed to the Admissions Director, either by phone, fax, e-mail, or in writing.

Written referral packets containing the candidate's most recent educational plan and evaluations are reviewed for appropriateness for the program. If the candidate is deemed appropriate, the Admissions Director will contact the referral source, schedule an observation in the student's current placement (optional), and schedule an Intake Evaluation.

At the Intake Evaluation, the candidate is seen by members of the clinical team; whenever possible, this evaluation occurs at The Learning Center. Prior to the evaluation, a Pre-Intake Summary describing the student, the reason for referral, placement history, functioning level, etc. is prepared with information from the referral packet; this summary is then routed to clinical team members to help them prepare for the Intake Evaluation. The Intake Evaluation consists of assessments in the areas of Functional Academics, Speech and Language, Employment Skills, Behavior Management and Residential Skills. While a candidate is involved in the Intake Evaluation, those accompanying her/him are given the opportunity to tour the program and learn about The Learning Center's policies. In addition, they are interviewed for Psychological/Social and Medical History information.

Within two weeks of the Intake Evaluation, the clinical team meets to discuss the suitability of the applicant for The Learning Center. If the team is unable to reach a decision, a list of questions may be generated and the team may request that the applicant re-visit the day and/or residential program. A maximum of two visits, which may include an overnight visit, are scheduled. A final decision will be made within one week of the second visit. If a student is enrolled in the program, parents and interested parties receive an Admissions Handbook and a list of contacts specific to their student.

Upon acceptance and prior to admission, we require the following information: the student's immunization record, written doctor's orders for medical treatments, a supply of current medication, health insurance information, consent forms signed by the student's guardian, a placement agreement signed by the funding agency and guardian and emergency contact information.
